Monte: The journey begins in the heart of Monte, a charming parish with an old-world appeal. From here, the path takes you along the traditional route followed by pilgrims or ‘romeiros’, offering a glimpse into Madeira’s deep-rooted religious customs. Every year, locals undertake this pilgrimage to honor Our Lady of the Mountain, marking a major event in the Madeiran calendar.
Unforgettable Path: As you tread the path of the romeiros, you will find yourself traversing through a diverse range of landscapes, including lush laurel forests, quaint rural settlements, and verdant pastures, showcasing the island’s biodiversity and agricultural tradition. The trail offers a serene environment, where the only sounds you hear are the rustling leaves, the chirping birds, and the gentle flow of levadas – the historic irrigation channels that are a characteristic feature of Madeira.
Viewpoints: The trail is punctuated by several viewpoints, each offering magnificent panoramic views of the island’s mountainous terrain, the shimmering Atlantic Ocean, and the capital city of Funchal nestled in the valley below. These are the perfect spots for photography enthusiasts or simply to pause, catch your breath, and soak in the grandeur of the island.
Curral dos Romeiros: As you reach Curral dos Romeiros, you’ll come across a beautiful picnic area with tables and benches. This provides an excellent spot to rest and enjoy a leisurely meal while taking in the surrounding natural beauty.

If you need to cancel your reservation, a refund will only be provided if the cancellation is made by 4:00 PM the day before the scheduled tour/walk.
Please ensure you come prepared with suitable walking shoes or boots and a warm coat, especially if temperatures are low in the mountains.
For full-day walks, please bring a picnic and water with you as they will not be provided by Madeira Sunrise Tours.
