Itinerary

Queimadas: Our adventure begins in the charming village of Queimadas, nestled amidst verdant valleys and surrounded by the Laurissilva Forest. As you set foot on the trail, you’ll be greeted by the gentle murmur of streams and the lush foliage that characterizes this idyllic starting point. Take a moment to immerse yourself in the serene surroundings and appreciate the untouched beauty of nature.

The Journey: As you follow the trail, you’ll tread alongside the Levada do Caldeirão Verde, one of Madeira’s famed water channels that have been irrigating the island’s lands for centuries. These levadas not only provide a path for your journey but also contribute a calming melody of flowing water to the soundtrack of your walk.

Laurissilva Forest: The journey leads you deep into Madeira’s laurisilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll be walking amongst a lush tapestry of ferns, laurels, and heather, all of which thrive in this unique ecosystem. The canopy of green overhead, the moss-covered stones underfoot, and the misty air surrounding you make for a truly ethereal experience.

Tunels: One of the trail’s highlights is the series of tunnels you’ll need to pass through. These add a sense of adventure to your hike, but remember to carry a torchlight, as they can get quite dark.

Caldeirão Verde: Your hike culminates at the breathtaking Caldeirão Verde, or Green Cauldron. This is a massive natural amphitheatre, adorned with a spectacular waterfall cascading from over 100m high into a crystal-clear lagoon. The sight of the waterfall, the emerald hues of the surrounding vegetation, and the sheer cliff faces create an awe-inspiring spectacle of nature’s raw beauty. It’s a perfect place to rest, enjoy a picnic, and take memorable photos.

The Caldeirão Verde walk is around 13km long and is of moderate difficulty. It takes about 5 hours to complete, but the path is well-marked and beautifully maintained.
