Itinerary

The Wine Route: The standout feature of this walk is the array of meticulously maintained vineyard terraces you’ll encounter along the way. The sight of these stepped vineyards, climbing the rugged slopes of the region, creates a unique, picturesque landscape. These terraces are a testament to the ingenious adaptation of Madeiran farmers to their challenging environment, and their deep-rooted commitment to wine cultivation.

Vineyard Terraces: As you wander through these vineyard terraces, you’ll witness a variety of grapes that contribute to the famous Madeira wine, including Malvasia, Verdelho, Bual, and Sercial. Depending on the time of your visit, you may even be lucky enough to observe the harvest in action, providing a fascinating insight into the labor-intensive process of winemaking.

Scenery: The walk also offers captivating panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. Amidst the vibrant greens of the vineyards, you can see the stunning blue Atlantic Ocean, the rustic homes of local farmers, and the towering mountain ranges in the distance. These views serve as a beautiful backdrop to your walk and offer countless photo opportunities. Along the trail, there are also numerous spots to pause, soak in the tranquillity, and perhaps enjoy a picnic with some local cheese and a glass of Madeira wine. After all, what could be more enjoyable than savoring the local produce amidst the very vineyards where the grapes are grown?
