Itinerary
Pico dos Barcelos: We commence our tour at the Pico dos Barcelos viewpoint. This popular lookout offers panoramic views of Funchal’s picturesque cityscape, harbor, and the azure Atlantic Ocean. The viewpoint, set at different levels, provides ample opportunity to capture some great photographs.
Eira do Serrado: Our journey continues as we ascend into the mountains to reach Eira do Serrado. At an elevation of 1094 meters, this viewpoint overlooks the deep valley of Curral das Freiras (Nuns Valley). Be prepared to be swept away by the majestic sight of rugged mountains encircling this secluded village. There’s also a hotel and a gift shop where you can shop for traditional Madeiran souvenirs.
Nuns Valley (Curral das Freiras): We descend into the heart of Nuns Valley, a small village nestled in the island’s interior. The village got its name from the 16th century when nuns from the Santa Clara convent in Funchal fled here to escape pirate attacks. Here you can taste the local chestnut delicacies and learn about the village’s fascinating history. The views from the village up to the surrounding mountains are awe-inspiring and provide a distinct perspective from the lofty viewpoints above.
