Itinerary
Referta: The walk starts in the peaceful village of Referta, where you can enjoy the charm of local Madeiran life, away from the hustle and bustle of larger towns. As you embark on the path, you are immediately greeted by a stunning view of the ocean – a sight that will accompany you for a large part of your journey.
The Path: The path itself is a levada walk – levadas being the historic irrigation channels that are a characteristic feature of Madeira’s landscape. They were created by early settlers to carry water to the island’s terraced farmlands, and these levada walks offer a unique view of Madeira’s rural life.
Features: As you continue along the levada, you’ll encounter lush vegetation, picturesque vineyards, and terraced fields, some of which still follow the traditional cultivation methods, including sugarcane and banana plantations. This offers an authentic look into the agricultural life of Madeira. The trail is beautifully framed by laurel and eucalyptus trees, which provide a canopy over the levada. You’ll find yourself immersed in the verdant surroundings, bathed in the intoxicating scents of wildflowers and herbs, offering a soothing sensory experience.
Castelejo: A key highlight of the route is the stunning viewpoint at Castelejo. Here, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of the northern coastline and the majestic mountains in the backdrop. This is a fantastic spot for photographs and a well-deserved rest while you soak in the magnificent views.
