Itinerary
Pico do Areeiro: Your journey begins at Pico do Areeiro, the third highest peak of the island, standing at an impressive height of 1,818 meters. Even at the start, you are met with awe-inspiring vistas of rugged mountain ranges, lush valleys, and, on a clear day, the glistening Atlantic Ocean in the distance.
Spectacular Vistas: As you tread along this path, you’ll be amazed by the unique spectacle of watching the clouds drift below you, casting ever-changing shadows on the landscape. This ethereal scenery provides an otherworldly backdrop for your trek, making it a truly unforgettable experience. The trail also takes you through a series of tunnels carved into the mountains, so don’t forget to carry a torchlight. These tunnels, albeit a bit challenging, add a sense of adventure and uniqueness to your hike.
Pico Ruivo: Your journey culminates at Pico Ruivo, the highest peak in Madeira at 1,862 meters. The view from the top is simply phenomenal, offering a 360-degree panorama of the entire island. Here, above the sea of clouds, you’ll feel an exhilarating sense of achievement. This makes for a fitting reward for the challenging hike and provides incredible photo opportunities.
A Test of Endurance: While the walk is demanding due to its steep ascents and descents, it is well-maintained and safe. It requires a good fitness level, suitable clothing, and footwear to complete it comfortably.
The Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo walk is not just about reaching the destination, but it’s about the journey itself. The natural beauty, the challenge of the terrain, and the breathtaking views all combine to create an immersive experience that stays with you long after the walk is over.
